Food is something that affects us all, most of us eat several times a day. Food creates commitment and the municipality's meal service receives a lot of questions, from both diners and other guests. Here you will find a summary of the most common questions and answers about the food which we serve.

How does the municipality plan the menu?

Menus are planned by the municipality's meal developers in collaboration with chefs from our kitchens. We follow the Swedish Food Agency's recommendations with the guests' wishes in mind. The goal is to offer nutritious and well-prepared meals that do not have too much impact on the climate.

This is partly done through well-sourced ingredients and a seasonal menu. About 8,000 lunches are being served every day in our preschools, schools and service centers. It is a big challenge to get all the guests to appreciate each dish as we all have different taste preferences.

What is offered for the main courses in our restaurants?

  • The schools offer a vegetable buffet, Swedish crisp-bread and milk.
  • The preschools offer different vegetable dishes or a vegetable buffet every day, as well as milk.
  • Service apartments’ restaurants offer a vegetable buffet, crackers and beverages..

The reason for this is that there will be an opportunity to supplement your meal and to be able to make up your own plate of vegetables, carbohydrates and protein. A good way to compose your meal is to use the plate model. It is based on the plate being divided into three parts, two larger and one slightly smaller. One of the larger ones should be filled with vegetables and root vegetables, the other with potatoes, rice and pasta or other carbohydrate sources. The smallest should be filled with protein, such as lentils, beans, eggs, fish or meat.

How often are vegetarian dishes served?

  • The schools offer two hot dishes every day and one of these is always vegetarian. 1-2 days a week we offer two vegetarian options.
  • The preschools offer a main course every day and 1–2 times a week it is vegetarian.
  • The service houses offer two hot dishes every day, one of which is sometimes vegetarian. 2 days a week on average.

Why do you serve vegetable-based and vegetarian meals?

Our mission includes serving varied meals that are both nutritious and sustainable for the climate and public health.

Root vegetables, legumes, vegetables and whole grain products contain both energy, protein and fiber. If you combine these ingredients, it becomes a complete meal with a low climate impact. Plant-based products require less of the earth's resources and have less impact compared to animal products.

How do you choose which meat, chicken, fish, carbohydrates and vegetables you serve?

We choose to serve Swedish meat and chicken in our restaurants. This is because it affects the climate less, Swedish animal legislation is stricter than the rest of the EU, this means that the animals get a better environment to live in.

All the fish we serve are MSC-labeled. This means that an external organization checks that the fish is fished and handled correctly throughout the process.

We buy vegetables and fruit according to the season. This means that during the winter we serve more root vegetables, as these are vegetables that can be stored for longer periods of time. In the spring and summer, the range is wider and we can vary more.

We serve many different sources of carbohydrates with our meals. Many ingredients are grown nearby, such as potatoes, oat rice and wheat, while rice, bulgur and couscous are grown further away. Those grown further away are not served as often and are mostly organically grown.

When do you serve ketchup or lingonberry jam?

This is a common question from students in schools.

We serve ketchup, lingonberries, beetroot and some other accompaniments when serving classic dishes such as veal stew, meatballs or pasta.

How can I as a guest influence what is served?

We think it is important that those who eat our food are also satisfied and have the opportunity to have their opinions heard. Depending on who you are, there are different forums for you to leave comments about the food.

  • If you are a student at one of our schools, you can get involved in the food council, where you can express your opinions, ask questions and get answers. Check with the student council that you have a functioning food council at your school.
  • If you have home care services and have meals delivered to your home, you can contact your home care area or the municipality's customer service if you have any comments. If you are a relative, you are also welcome to have your voice heard.
  • If you live, or are a relative of someone who lives in one of the municipality's service houses, there

Can I request meals as a student at a school?

Many of our guests’ favorite meals are already being planned and written on the menu right from the beginning.

The concept of a wish week or wish days exists among our guests at primary schools. Some schools have a whole week where students have democratically chosen their meals. Such a week is planned in the same way as our menu, with different dishes on different days of the week: 1 fish dish, 1 vegetarian dish, 1 soup, 2 meat or chicken dishes. How often a school has a week of choice is up to each kitchen to decide together with the school.

As a parent or guardian, can I eat lunch at my child's school?

Yes, you are very welcome to eat with your child at school!

Once a semester, you as a guardian can eat lunch at your child's school. You first need to contact the school and pre-register to make sure it is suitable.

My child has a special diet, what should I do?
